Sequel to the approval given by its Senate, the University of Ibadan on Friday elected Congregation Representatives into its Governing Council through electronic Voting.

The election saw the former National Treasurer of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Professor Ademola Aremu polling 852 votes to defeat his challengers and Professor of English language Babatunde Omobowale who polled 752 votes.

In the non-academic staff category, C.T.A Semowo who polled 637 votes defeated Alfred Ilesanmi Jimoh and Akinbola Alao who polled 261 and 598 votes respectively.

In the polls, total number of accredited voters was 2,564 while 1,624 voted.

Before Friday elections, the University had test-ran the electronic voting platform to accommodate those who otherwise might not have been captured

Unlike previous elections which automatically disqualify persons not on campus to physically cast their votes, the e-voting allowed those who had traveled out of Ibadan to cast their votes.

Our man gathered that the election was coordinated from a control room where electronic voting PIN was sent to accredited voters via email to cast their votes.

The seamless method of e-voting had been canvassed for Nigeria during the 2019 elections but was not approved by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Reacting to his victory at the polls, Professor Ademola Aremu who congratulated all participants in the election stated that being elected has further challenged him to continue to work more to represent the interests of the voiceless.
