Following an order by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu to his personnel to investigation the alleged killing of three policemen and a civilian by some soldiers in Taraba state, a community head, High Chief Kehinde Kalejaiye has urged the police boss not to allow the matter to be swept under the carpet as he said, the only act that could pacify the families of the slain officers and civilian  is to see justice being served.

In a statement on Wednesday by the Police spokesperson, DCP Frank Mba, while explaining how the incident occurred, Mba said the soldiers injured the police officers who were in Ibi, Taraba state, to arrest a kidnap kingpin identified as Alhaji Hamisu indicted in a series of high-profile kidnap incidents in the state.

Mba stated that the officers, led by ASP Felix Adolije of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) reportedly came under sudden attack and shooting by soldiers of the Nigerian Army, along Ibi – Jalingo Road, Taraba state.

He added that the officers, who were taking the arrested suspect, Alhaji Hamisu to the Command Headquarters in Jalingo, were shot at severally by the soldiers despite sufficient proof that they are Police personnel on legitimate duty.

“Three Policemen comprising one Inspector and two Sergeants and one civilian died as a result of gunshot injuries sustained in the attack, while others sustained serious gunshot wounds. The soldiers thereafter released the handcuffed suspect, Alhaji Hamisu, who is now on the run” he said.

It would be recalled that Alhaji Hamisu, a notorious kidnap kingpin, has been on the Police wanted list for his complicity in several high-profile kidnap cases including the recent abduction of an Oil-Mogul in Taraba state wherein a ransom of about One Hundred Million Naira (N100,000,000) was paid.

Reacting to the sad incident, High Chief Kalejaiye said it is obvious that the killer soldiers were working for the kidnap kingpin and in the course of protecting him from arrest by the police, they committed the murderous acts.

He said, “We have seen cases of soldiers brutally attacking and beating mercilessly innocent citizens but this shouldn’t be allowed to be happening to police officers. If they claim superiority over civilians should it be allowed to happen to police officers too?

In a saner society, soldiers are protective of the weak and the oppressed but here in Nigeria reverse is the case.

Rather than protect, they unleash terror and mayhem on innocent citizens. I am therefore calling for the arrest and dismissal of the killer soldiers from the military because they are bad examples to the noble profession.

While I condole with the family of the deceased slain officers, I want to appeal to IGP Adamu Muhammad to ensure that the suspects are made to answer for their sins.

I also want to ask that the identity of the soldiers involved and their faces should be made public. The soul of the deceased and That of their families are crying for justice and they should not be denied of this.”

High Chief Kalejaiye who is the head of Otumara , Apapa road and Ojoniyun community further appeals to the IGP to see to the welfare of the families of the affected police officers by financially empowering their wives and giving scholarship to their children in order to ease their burden of needs.

Meanwhile, police have commenced full investigation into the bizarre and unfortunate incident while the remains of the deceased have been deposited in the morgue while the IGP has ordered the AIG Medicals to proceed to Jalingo to ensure that the injured Police officers are adequately treated.
