Community leader applauds Lagos Assembly for establishing “Amotekun” border patrol unit

Mojisola Lawal
The community head of Otumara 11, Apapa road, Ojo-oniyun and its environs, High Chief Kehinde Kalejaiye has applauded the passing of the bill establishing “Amotekun” border patrol unit.

Members of the Lagos State Assembly on Tuesday unanimously passed the amended Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps Agency Bill, 2020 which seeks to create a border patrol unit to be known as “Amotekun” under the State’s Neighborhood Safety Corps Agency.

Kalejaiye who has been an advocate of community policing while reacting to the passage of the bill said when effective it will check the growing rate of insecurity and other criminality in Lagos state.

According to him, only the locals who are familiar with the inside-out of their community can fish out suspected criminals among the people.

He said, “I must commend our legislators in Lagos state for the passage of the bill. I have no doubt in my mind that when it eventually becomes operational, cases of kidnapping, armed robbery and banditry in Lagos state would be a thing of the past.

Amotekun is the solution to the lingering insecurity challenges not only in Lagos state but in the South West region. I also wish to thank the six South West governors and speakers of States’ Houses of Assemblies for the brilliant initiative.”

While cautioning governors and elite politicians not to see the security outfit as tools of oppression and settling scores, he advised, “I am appealing to all politicians to join hands in making success out of the security outfit, Amotekun. I have no doubt in my mind that they will complement the efforts of the State’s Neighborhood Safety Corps Agency in ensuring safety of lives and property.

While I commend the efforts of the Nigerian Police to curtailing incessant insecurity across the country, I appeal to our Governors to invest in the training and retraining of Amotekun personnel and also ensure that they are well remunerated so as not to be easily lured into criminalities.”
