Traditional ruler, Otumara community in the Lagos Mainland Local Government of Lagos State, High Chief Kehinde Kalejaiye, has urged both the Federal and State governments to give priority to the rights of the girl Child.

The International Day of the Girl Child is celebrated annually on October 11 globally. The United Nations day set aside the day to address challenges confronting girl child.

While making a case for the protection of the rights of the Girl child during this year’s International Day of the Girl Child themed, “Our Time Is Now – Our Rights, Our Future”, Kalejaiye said a girl child as well as the boy child deserves unrestricted access to education, quality healthcare and protection against all forms of abuses.

He added that protections are needed for the girl child to live a life that is free from violence, slavery and mental torture.

The girl child, according to him, as well as the boy child, deserves a right to safe life, quality and affordable education, healthcare and humane habitation.

While calling on the government and caregivers to protect the children against sexual and domestic abuse, he said, “The rights of the girl child are guaranteed by the country’s constitution but it is unfortunate that compliance and implementation of the law are major issues thereby threatening the safety and the rights of girls.

Regardless of the gender, no child should be exposed to child labour or violence in any form. As responsible parents and governments, our major priorities should be the protection of our children against mental and emotional abuse torture and maltreatment, including sexual abuse.

We must endeavour to protect them from slavery either while in the custody of the caregiver or schools or any other person.

As the world celebrates the girl child today, I am appealing to all Nigerians, particularly government at all levels to rethink the place of the feminine gender in the entire sectors and social institutions in the society give backing to all the girl child rights as captured in the constitution.

It is time we cleanse ourselves of the conviction that the female cannot be given equal opportunity to function with the male. The girl child deserves all the care and attentions just like the boy child.”
