Chairman, Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, Public Petitions and LASIEC, Hon. (Barr.) Victor Akande, has urged government at all levels to provide soft loans for the indigents, especially the youths to alleviate poverty and economic hardship.

The lawmaker representing Ojo Constituency 1 made the call at the Mega Empowerment programme on Tuesday where he empowered hundreds of people from his constituency to support their businesses and facilitate start-ups.

Akande identified empowering the youths and the indigents as one of the ways to end poverty in the country.

He said, “Empowering the youths and indigents is not only about giving them money but its also about providing soft loan and equipment that will be useful to them and make them self reliant.

“As part of my contributions to adding value to our youths, today, about 300 constituents comprising old and young, male and female are being empowered.

We have cash gifts of N200,000, N100,000, N50,000 and machineries including sewing machines, grinding machines, pop corn machines, shoe sewing machines, dryers and others.

“I threw the nomination of beneficiaries open to party members and to the residents.

Leaders of our party nominated people, but it is not about party alone, I selected people within the community, church, mosques and others.

“This is who I am, I am people-oriented, the people put me there to represent them and I have to thank them.

“I want to empower the youths so that they can empower the old ones. The government should empower the people and give them soft loans so that there would be an end to poverty in the country.

“We have trained some of the beneficiaries on how to use the items so that they would not sell them. I am most grateful to members of my constituents for their support over the years.
This is a way of showing gratitude to them.”

Some of the beneficiaries expressed appreciation to the lawmaker.

One of the beneficiaries and a university undergraduate, Miss Arolowo Ebunoluwa said proceed from the grinding machine she was given would help to sustain her education.

Another beneficiary, Olawale Alake, a former ward vice chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the district, thanked the lawmaker for the gift of hair dryer.

“I am giving it to my wife. Hon. Akande has been doing this since the past eight years that he got to the assembly. I want to advise the people to make use of the items given to them,” he said.

Items distributed include electricity generating sets, clippers, sewing machines, grinding machines, sealing machines and cash gift, shoe making machines, welding machines, popcorn making machines and direct cash donations to beneficiaries.
