High Chief Kehinde Kalejiaye, traditional ruler of Otumara community in Lagos Mainland Local Government Area, has appealed for the recruitment of medical staff at the Otumara Primary Health Centre for the provision of optimal healthcare for residents in the community.

The traditional ruler made the appeal on Sunday at the Ebute Metta General Hospital, Cemetery Street, Lagos, where the Lagos State First Lady, Dr (Mrs) Claudiana Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, welcomed the first baby of the year 2023.

The new born, Baby Iruamen weighed 2.9kg and was delivered at the facility at exactly 1202hrs at the Ebute Metta General Hospital.

Earlier in her address at the event, Dr Sanwo-Olu commended the medical staff of the facility for efficient service delivery despite obvious challenges.

She said, “We are all here in Ebute Metta to welcome our new baby of the year born on January 1st, 2023. This reminds me of when they were looking for the Lord Jesus Christ and the three wise men had to search and search for Jesus Christ until they found him.

We have come to this community to welcome our baby of the year. We have been told that our baby is Baby Iruamen, born at exactly 1202hrs at the Ebute Metta General Hospital that was founded in 1958. She was weighed 2.9kg.

Even though there is a lot of renovation going on at the hospital, we appreciate the Lagos State Government for what they are doing. We are aware of the issues that are peculiar to the General Hospital.

We pray and hope that members of the community will found it fit to find somewhere similar so that we can have a bigger expansion of the hospital.

Permanent Secretary, Primary Health Board, Dr Ibrahim Mustapha with High Chief Kehinde Kalejaiye at the event.

I have heard your complaints about Ebute Metta being a containerised General Hospital. I have heard your complaints about the urgent need for utility vehicles that you have recommended and capacity development of our staff.

These things that you have mentioned would be mentioned to the Governor by my humble self. I will definitely deliver your message.

Honestly, I am delighted to be here. We are very proud of you in Ebute Metta despite the harsh condition you are working in, you still give in hundred per cent.

I have been getting a lot of reports from your Medical Director that you are ready to work even when I asked if the hospital should be demolished for a state-of-the-art facility. Thank you very much for taking care of our patients.

But before I go, the chairman of Health Service Commission has rightly said that Health Insurance is the way to go. Please key into the anointing of Ilera Eko that is on-going. Do not be found wanting, it can save lives as there is a lot going on. We are going to present our birth certificate to our baby to show that she is a bonafide citizen of Nigeria.”

While commending the Lagos State Government for the huge achievements and investments made in the health sector, traditional ruler of Otumara community and Apapa road, High Chief Kehinde Kalejaiye, made a special appeal to the Permanent Secretary of the Primary Healthcare Board, Dr Ibrahim Mustapha for recruitment of medical staff and an upgrade of the Otumara Primary Healthcare centre.

Speaking on the area of needs of Otumara Primary Health Centre which was built by him, Kalejaiye stated that the health centre is short-staffed and would require more medical staff to be able to serve the people of the community optimally.

According to the traditional ruler, there are only two nurses at the facility attending to the health needs of the almost half a million residents of the community.

He said, “I congratulate the parents of today’s baby of the year. I pray our good Lord protect the baby and provide for the family to be able to cater for the needs of the baby and her siblings.

Also, I must commend the Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu and his amiable wife, the first lady of the state, Mrs Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu for their contributions to the health sector of the state.

Having said this, I want to appeal to the Governor to accede to the requests of the Ebute Metta General Hospital just as I am appealing for an upgrade of the Otumara Primary Health Centre with more medical staff, especially medical doctors and nurses, to be recruited to meet up with the healthcare needs of the community.”

He commended the Lagos State Government Ministry of Health, the State Health Service Commission, State Primary healthcare Board and all development partners for the show of love and gifts showered on the baby of the year and her parents.
