UNIBEN student raped, commits suicide

A 20-year-old student of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) after being raped reportedly committed suicide.

The victim identified as Christabel Owoicho was a 300-level student of the department of Medical Laboratory Science allegedly locked herself up in her hostel, increased the volume of the sound system, dropped a suicide note and drank an insecticide, Snipper to end her life on Tuesday, 18, 2019.

The deceased roommate Folakemi described the late Christabel as an introvert.
According to Folakemi, the deceased was an exceptionally brilliant student and she had no boyfriend. And all her time was devoted to her studies. Christabel was a virgin before she was raped. I think she was heartbroken and depressed because of her inhuman encounter with the rapist led to her committing suicide.”

Meanwhile, Edo State Police spokesman, DSP Chidi Nwabuzor said no arrest has been made as the rapist fled, adding that, the victim’s suicide note was incoherent.

“Medical professionals will examine the remains to ascertain the victim’s psychiatric health” DSP Nwabuzor added.
