Traditional head, Otumara II, Apapa road, Ojoniyun and its environs, High Chief Kehinde Kalejaiye has urged the Inspector General of Police to ensure that the killers of Mrs. Funke Olakunrin, daughter of the leader of Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere, Pa Reuben Fasoranti are nabbed.

Mrs Olakunrin was murdered Friday along Akure-Ore road by unknown gunmen.

High Chief Kalejaiye in a statement sent to newsexplorersng.com condoled with Chief  S.A Olakunrin, SAN and his family on Pep, On do State on the death of their wife while calling on the government to take drastic steps to put an end to incessant killings and kidnapping in the country.

According to Kalejaiye, killings and kidnapping is fast becoming a trend in the Southwest.

He said, “The killing of Mrs Olakunrin is quite unfortunate. While I condole with our leader, Pa Fasoranti and the children of the deceased, I want to implore the Federal Government to be more proactive in securing lives of the citizenry.

Also, we cannot rule out economic gains as partly responsible for the increasing rate of crime. To fight crime, the FG should create employment for our youths.

Many of them see crime as alternative to their joblessness. But they should know that engaging in crime is not the best way out of poverty and that life is sacred and should be valued. The perpetrators of this devilish act are not spirit.

I am sure they are human and they live among us. The police should comb the nooks and crannies of Ondo state particularly the Akure-Ore road where the incident occurred to fish out the murderers.”

Reacting to the suggestion by the country’s vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo that the Federal government may deplore the army to patrol the highways to check insecurity, the traditional leader said it is an invitation to anarchy.

According to him, soldiers are meant to protect the territorial border of the country and not to get involved in civil matters.

He said, “The call by Prof Osinbajo on the army to patrol our highways is in good faith but we should be careful not to cause anarchy with it.

The bad ones among the soldiers could use that as an opportunity to oppress and extort innocent citizens. Protection of lives and property of Nigerians is the responsibility of the police. I am sure if given the needed support, they are up to it.

Inviting the soldiers to patrol almost 150 highways in the country would amount to overstressing them considering the war against insurgency which they are still actively engaged in the Northeast.

The soldiers are better off at the border, bringing them to protect the highways implies that the police have failed. So I want to advice the Inspector General of Police to come up with a strategy to end the kidnapping and killings.”

High Chief Kalejaiye however advised Nigerians to be cautious in pointing accusing finger to a particular ethnic group and allow the police to do their work.

He said, “Either she was killed by an Hausa, Igbo, Yoruba or a Fulani, the point remains she had been murdered and we are all thrown into mourning. However, at this time that we are mourning her exit, we should also be careful not to overheat the polity or cause inter-tribal clashes by calling out one ethnic group or the other as being responsible for the murder. We should allow the police to investigate the murder and fish out the killers. It is only through this that we would know those behind the killing and thereafter made them to face the wrath of the law. The unity and security of the country and the citizen is paramount therefore we must allow the government and the security agencies to do their work.”
