‘We will vote for politicians that will serve our interests’- Igbo Muslims

Toyin Subair

Igbo Muslims in Southeast, Nigeria have expressed their willingness to vote for politicians who will serve their interests after the 2019 general elections.

This position was made known by the umbrella body of Muslims in the region, the South Eastern Muslims Organization of Nigeria (SEMON) during its one-day conference held at the National Mosque in Abuja recently.

SEMON members observed that the greatest challenge confronting them is their total exclusion from the political formation of the country.

In a 10-page statement issued at the end of the conference and signed by the National Chairman of the group, Muhammad Obiahu Ajah Jr., National Secretary, Abdur-Rahman Nwabueze Urama and National PRO, Yahya Onyekachi Ugwu, SEMON urged Igbo Muslims to aspire for political offices and contest for elective positions in the forthcoming elections at all levels.

While describing as unacceptable the situation where no appointment is allocated to Igbo Muslims by both Federal and State governments, SEMON advocate for Igbo Muslims’ unity in order to actualise its demand.

Meanwhile, participants have commended the good works of SEMON leadership in the propagation of Islam and unity among Muslims in Nigeria.

“We pray for peace and unity of Nigeria and call on politicians to play by the rules as the 2019 general elections approach. We wish Igbo Muslim politicians the best in future general elections,” the statement read in part.
