Community Leader, High Chief Kehinde Kalejaiye has condoled with the families of the victims of gas explosion at Baruwa in the Alimosho Local Government of Lagos state.

In the explosion which occurred in the early hours of Thursday at Best Roof cooking gas shop, eight persons have so far been reported dead while 25 houses, 16 shops and one primary school were affected by the inferno.

In his condolence letter which was made available to newsexplorersng.com, while commending the swiftness of fire fighters and other emergency agencies, High Chief Kalejaiye called for stricter regulations on gas and other petroleum products, saying that, human lives are too precious to be lost in avoidable situations.

He added, “To the bereaved families, words are not enough to console you at the moment but I pray to almighty God to comfort your aching hearts and grant the souls of the deceased eternal rest.

And to those receiving treatment at the Gbagada General Hospital, May God healing hand be on all of you. I wish every one of you quick recovery from the injuries sustained in the explosion.

I want to prompt the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) to regulate the activities of operators of gas stations in Lagos state but across the country. Gas stations are not to be sited in a crowded and compacted environment in the case of an emergency situation such as what happened today in Baruwa, Ipaja, Lagos.

The Lagos state government and its Ministry of the Environment to address the environment factor to the explosion. Alimosho Local Government is the most populated district in Lagos state, this is enough reason for greater attentions to be focused on the district. The agency should ensure that safety measures are adhered to and most especially gas stations should not be sited in non-residential areas.

Also concerned agencies must enforce rules guiding the locations and operations of gas stations to forestall a recurrence of the explosion. It is disheartening to see precious lives being wasted away daily in accidents and other emergency situations.”

While praying to God to grant the souls of the departed eternal rest, Kalejaiye urged Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to help victims of the explosion that lost property and means of livelihood to get back to business.

He said, “The government should adequately equip the fire fighters to be able to respond to emergency situations. Importantly, in this moment of trials, the Lagos state Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu as he has always been doing, should provide a shoulder to lean on for victims of the gas explosion.

I am appealing to him to provide shelter for those that lost property and was rendered homeless as a result of the disaster and also provide means of livelihood for business owners that suffered loss in the explosion.”
