Lagos Schools Resumption: Kalejaiye Advises Parents, Pupils On Safety

Mojisola Lawal

As schools in Lagos State set to resume on September 13, traditional head in Otumara community in Lagos Mainland Local Government of Lagos State has advised parents and guardians on the safety of the children while also congratulating returning and old students on the commencement of academic session.

Kalejaiye, in a statement on Tuesday while commending parents and guardians for their worthy investment in the future of their children, urges them to prioritize the safety and security of their children  by ensuring that they are equipped with necessary safety kits, particularly, as the third wave of COVID-19 pandemic spreads rapidly across communities.

In a release issued by the State Ministry of Education, the Commissioner, Mrs. Folasade Adefisayo, stated that all schools are expected to resume on Monday, 13th September 2021, while students of Model Colleges and Upgraded Schools will be required to resume in batches from Sunday 19th September, 2021.

Consequently, Kalejaiye advised parents to kit their children with facemasks and shields to keep them safe from contracting the virus.

He said, “I congratulate parents, guardians and pupils on the commencement of yet another academic session. May we all reap bountifully on our investment on our children. Meanwhile as we prepare to return our children to schools beginning on September 13, I am urging us to ensure we kit our children with necessary safety tools like the face shield or facemask and hand sanitizers.

We must ensure we educate them, as we have always done, to be conscious of their environment and avoid crowded spaces as the third wave of COVID-19 spread rapidly within our communities. Maintaining social and physical distancing is one of the safest approach to curbing the spread of the virus and this, we must continue to adhere to as instructed by the Lagos State Government and the Ministry of Health.

As our children return to school for the new academic session, it is important that we adjust to the new reality to ensure not only our safety but the safety of our children. May we not labour in vain over our children. Once again, I pray to almighty God to provide for all our needs and protect us from the ravaging COVID-19 pandemic.”

Meanwhile, Kalejaiye has called on the Commissioner for Education, Mrs Folashade Adefisayo, to ensure speedy implementation of the approval for the construction of the senior secondary school in Ebute Metta (west) by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

According to Kalejaiye, the community is peaceful and expectant of the visit of officials of the Ministry.

He said, “It’s been two years since the approval of the Senior Secondary School residents in the Lagos Mainland Local Government by Governor Sanwo-Olu and the ministry has assured us of the implementation of the project.

I am now urging them to fast-track the construction, especially as schools are resuming on September 13, so that the age-long suffering students from the community face to complete their secondary education journeying outside of the district will be a thing of the past.

So, I am appealing to the Commissioner to put us in her-to-list to ease the financial burden of daily transport fares on parents and also safe the children from joining bad gang.”
