How prepared are you for the call of death?

Subair Mohammed

Death is inevitability for every living soul. It is a journey of no return that every individual must embark upon. So, how prepared are you for the call of death?

As stated in Surat-ul- Nisaa verse 78, death is a compulsion “Wherever you may be, death will overtake you, even if you should be within towers of lofty construction…”

Before death comes, as believers, it is enjoined on us to prepare three things to take along with us on the journey to the hereafter:

These are Tawhid-al- ulu hiyah (oneness of Lordship), Tawhid-al- rubbu biyah (oneness of worship), and Tawhid-al Asma was Siffat (oneness of characteristics).

From individual perspective, death is viewed with the number of years we have spent on earth but this is not so with Allah. Death comes knocking on every soul as Allah wills and at the expiration of the time allotted to each individual soul. As Allah has said that He is the knower of the soul that will be the first and the soul that will be the last to exit this earth.

It is said in the glorious Quran that every living soul no matter his/her status in life will one day become history. In our sojourn through life either we are known for good or bad deeds, we will one day become history. So what kind of history or legacy are you planning to leave behind?

Surat Imran verse 185 says “Every soul will taste death, and you will only be given your [full] compensation on the Day of Resurrection. So he who is drawn away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise has attained [his desire]. And what is the life of this world except the enjoyment of delusion.”

What would you prefer your compensation to be in the hereafter? Al-janah or Jahanan? So, when Allah had said that these worldly pleasures which we are engulfed in are nothing but delusion, why then do we not take a bend and opt out of worldly enjoyment to spend our time in the worship of our Lord with absolute preparation for the inevitable.

Surat Az-Zumar verse 42 says that “Allah takes the souls at the time of their death, and those that do not die [He takes] during their sleep. Then He keeps those for which He has decreed death and releases the others for a specified term. Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought.”

What greater example there is than our sleep? Sleep is the younger brother of death. When we are in deep sleep; it is more or less as if we are dead. Allah wills our wake and or our death. But if we have the grace to be alive, what stops us as believers to spend our time as if we will not see the next minute? Why can’t we live our lives as Mumeen in total submission to the will of Allah?

And as the Prophet of Islam said three days before his death, “Not one of you must die but with resignation to the will of God, and with hope for his beneficence and pardon.” Therefore, as Muslims, it is incumbent upon us to seek Allah’s pardon and mercy in all our supplications and be mindful in all our deeds as death could come knocking on our souls at anytime”

And Allah knows best!
