‘Blasphemy’: Don’t Blame Islam For Killing Of Sokoto College Student, Says Ace Actor, Ibrahim Chatta

Ace Nollywood actor, Ibrahim Chatta, has asked the public not to blame Islam for the killing of Deborah Yakubu, a female student of Shehu Shagari College of Education in Sokoto, for alleged blasphemy.

The student was attacked and set ablaze by an angry mob over her remarks considered to be an insult to Prophet Mohammed.

Deborah’s death had provoked widespread outrage, with a huge number of Nigerians on social media demanding the arrest and prosecution of those responsible for her killing.

In a lengthy Instagram post on Friday, Chatta said the perpetrators of such acts should be blamed and not Islam.

He also cited several instances from the Quran showing that Islam frowns at violence and the action that led to the student’s murder.

The movie star called on security operatives to ensure justice is served.

He also enjoined people not to be inhuman while claiming to defend a religion that they have limited knowledge about.

“Blame the perpetrators not Muslims & Islam. Barbaric: A female student called Deborah burnt alive in Sokoto for insulting Prophet Muhammad. This is not true Islam,” he wrote.

“Killing and burning for hate speech is nothing close to Islamic laws. You all should be careful out there. Don’t be inhumane by defending the religion you know less about.

“All those that killed that lady in Sokoto for blasphemy must be arrested and punished accordingly #NoToFanaticism.”

The management of the college had earlier announced an indefinite shutdown of the institution amid the dust trailing the issue.
