REC, Shafaudeen Commend Oyo Residents for Upholding Democracy

The duo of Professor Sabit Ariyo Olagoke JP, founder, Shafaudeen-in-Islam worldwide and Oyo State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Barrister Mutiu Agboke have lauded Oyo state residents for upholding genuine democracy during last year general elections thus confirming Oyo as a PaceSetter state.

Both spoke in Ibadan during the conclusion of a week programme of Annual Shafaudeen In Islam Worldwide Convention Ishrat 2020 that took place at the spiritual headquarters of the mission at Wakajaye in the state capital.
The REC observed with satisfaction that most residents of the state shunned all forms of inducement and voted according to their conscience making them to effect a dramatic political change in the state.
Agboke also disclosed that his workers  also made great sacrifices during the national exercise adding that they turned down the overtures of politicians who wanted to bribe them in order to frustrate the will of voters.
Giving Kudo to his officers,the REC called on them to continue sustaining the virtue adding that their lives were put under danger in their bid to maintain the independence of INEC.
The Chief host, Professor Olagoke JP who spoke on “Nigeria Socio-economic enhancement: An antidote to National Disintegration” gave an 11-point recommendation to come out of the nations political, economic and social quagmire.
Olagoke who was also Dean School of Engineering, Federal Polytechnic Ilaro in Ogun state where he retired as a Chief lecturer said, “successful election process only can promote good governance through credible leadership and visionary leaders that will utilize privilege of positions of power to serve people rather than for self enrichment.”
“Political parties formed must operate on the principle of internal party democracy to choose a merit credible representatives who will be able to compete with others to add value to governance upon being elected or appointed, improving the quality of lives of the voters who give them the mandate,” he recommended.
Olagoke reiterated his earlier advocacy for parliamentary system of government stressing “presidential system in Nigeria is an expensive system that benefits less the reaming masses but avails the elites in power to waste resources through extravagant spending, heavy salary and allowances, unwarranted number of entourage, and advisers.”
The Islamic leader called for a downward review of salaries of  political office holders adding that doing that would stop wasteful spendings and desperate struggle for political power.
On economy, Olagoke called for diversification and patronising Nigeria goods.
Some books recently authored by  the  Chief Host were later launched at the occasion which attracted dignitaries from academia, politics, religion, security and the media while some were honoured with awards of excellence.
