Community head commends police for arresting killers of daughter of Afenifere leader

…Urges police to curb escalating crime rate
Akin Olayemi
Head of Otumara community, High chief Kehinde Kalejaiye has commended the Nigerian Police for the arrest of killers of Mrs. Funke Olakunrin, daughter of Pa Reuben Fasoranti who is one of the leaders of Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere.

Kalejaiye in a statement made available to newsexplorersng.com praised Inspector General of Police and police operatives while charging them to unravel the hidden faces behind the murder and kidnap of high profile personalities in the country.

It would be recalled that Olakunrin was murdered on the 12th of July, 2019 by unknown assailants between Kajola and Ore along Ondo-Ore road in Ondo State and the police had since launched a massive manhunt for her killers with the aim of bringing them to justice.
However, ten months, four suspects have been arrested by the police in connection with the murder.
They include: Lawal Mazaje ‘m’ 40yrs from Felele area of Kogi State, Adamu Adamu ‘m’ 50yrs from Jada area of Adamawa State, Mohammed Shehu Usman ‘m’ 26 years from Illela area of Sokoto State and Auwal Abubakar ‘m’ 25yrs from Shinkafi area of Zamfara State.
While condoling with Pa Fasoranti and the family the deceased left behind, Kalejaiye appreciates Nigerians for their patience, supports and cooperation throughout the period of the investigations into the unfortunate incident.
He however called for prompt prosecution of the suspects to serve as deterrent to others.
He said, “I am appealing to the Inspector General of Police to ensure that the suspected killers of Mrs Olakunrin are brought to justice to serve as lessons to other people who might be considering crime as an alternative. With the feat recorded, I also want to appeal to the police to maintain the tempo and unmask the faces behind the murder of high profile personalities in the country.
Further, I also urge the police to step up efforts in curbing the escalating crime rates in almost every part of the country. Poverty and hunger are no justifications for crime. If economic activities are lockdown as a measure to containing the coronavirus pandemic, how does that translate into some youths taking up arms and robbing innocent people?
We are in this together. We need to support the government and adhere to all instructions and preventive measures aimed at curbing the spread of the disease.
The police are trying but they need to do more to ensure that lives and property are adequately secured especially during the lockdown period and beyond it.”
