FUMCI distributes food items to Lagos residents

An Islamic charity and dawah organisation, Faith Unites Muslims Charity Initiatives (FUMCI) has called on all Nigerians especially Muslims in this month of Ramadan to fervently pray to God to ease the world of all afflictions particularly the COVID-19 pandemic which has claimed over a million lives globally.

Amir (President) of the organisation, Mallam AbdulMuiz Zubayr made the call on Saturday at the occasion of the distribution of relief materials of 4kg of rice, beans and cassava flakes (garri) to both Muslims and non-Muslims in Lagos.

While speaking to newsmen, Amir Zubayr said the intervention was as a result of the glaring economic hardship factored by the Coronavirus pandemic which according to him has turned many people into beggars and have nots.

He stated that, “FUMCI has been at the forefront of catering for the needs of the people especially the vulnerable Nigerians including the aged and the widows.

Annually, through the Project Feed-a-soul during the Ramadan fast, we provide varieties of meals for fasting Muslims across Lagos state. But due to the outbreak of COVID-19 disease, and with the economic impact of the presidential lockdown on many homes, we decided to complement government efforts by providing 4kg of rice, beans and garri to residents in the Lagos Mainland Local Government community.”

As the government partially relax the lockdown on movement and economic activities beginning from Monday 4, FUMCI General Secretary, Mallam Saheed Subair urged Nigerians as they go about their normal duties to adhere strictly to the social distancing order and preventive measures aimed at containing the coronavirus disease.

He said, “Since there is no known vaccine for the COVID-19, I want to appeal to Nigerians to obey the instructions and preventive measures as handed down by the government and health workers as through this the number of casualties will be reduced.

FUMCI has actively been involved in sensitising and enlightening the community about the disease. We have embarked on advocacy campaigns and distribution of hand sanitizers because practising regular personal hygiene is key to containing the disease.

The food items we are distributing here today is another of our intervention to bringing relief to homes in our community. We pray Allah grant us His mercy to overcome this global health crisis.”

While commending the efforts of FUMCI to addressing the material needs of the people, a community head, Chief Musbaudeen Maye said FUMCI has been at the vanguard of promoting Islamic ideals through charity and dawah propagation.

He said, “For many years, FUMCI has been providing meal supports for fasting Muslims during Ramadan. They have actively been involved in promoting Islamic knowledge and education of our children and catering for the welfare of the aged and the vulnerable.

This is another humane gesture from FUMCI; the distribution of food items to residents to relief them of the hardship occasioned by the lockdown. What more can I say than to pray to Allah to continue to strengthen them and also to call on wealthy Nigerians to support the organisation and complement them in advancing the cause of the people.”
