Do not re-introduce State-wide lockdown, Kalejaiye appeals to Sanwo-Olu

Akin Olayemi
High chief Kehinde kalejaiye of Otumara community in the Lagos Mainland Local Government of Lagos state has appealed to governor of the State, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu not to re-introduce the Statewide lockdown because of its associated economic and security challenges.

This appeal followed the online public opinion carried out by the Lagos state government on its social media platforms to determine the perspective of members of the public on the possibility of another lockdown of the state.

According to Kalejaiye, the state government needs to reinvent other strategies at coping with defiant Lagos residents rather than subjecting millions of residents in the state who survive on daily income to another round of hardship that accompanies such stay at home.

He stated that, “The Lagos state government needs to feel the pulse of the masses. While we know that the intent for the lockdown is for the general good of the masses, we also have to consider the negative impacts of such order especially from the economic and security perspective.

In the last Statewide lockdown exercise, the public literally turned to beggars while crime rates soar in the state with criminally minded youths taking up arms to dispossess innocent citizens out of hunger.

I will rather suggest that the government find a way around the public disobedience. They need to adopt other measures at dealing with the people that do not adhere to the stipulated preventive measures.

A fresh lockdown is not needed in Lagos state, what we need is a strict enforcement of the existing guidelines by the enforcement agencies in the state.”

While commending the administration of Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu on his efforts at containing the spread of Covid-19 pandemic in the state, Kalejaiye appealed to all residents in the State to continue to obey all safety and precautionary measures as outlined by the State government and other relevant health officials, noting that only the living and healthy can strive to attain a goals.

It would be recalled that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu recently threatened another lockdown in the coming weeks if disobedience and non-compliance with government’s directives on limiting the community spread of COVID-19 in the State persist.
