Anti-cultism law: Kalejaiye commends Lagos Assembly, appeals to Sanwo-Olu for enforcement

Akin Olayemi

A traditional head in Lagos community High Chief Kehinde Kalejaiye has commended the Lagos State House of Assembly for the passage of the bill proscribing cultism and related activities in the State.

It will be recalled that the Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday passed a bill banning cultism and cult related activities in the State stipulating a jail term of 21 years and 15 years for cultists and anyone who allows his premises as host venue for cult-related activity respectively.

While commending the move by Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa led State House of Assembly, Kalejaiye urged Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to append his signature to the law emphasising that it will cleanse and bring sanity to the State.

Kalejaiye further implore the Lagos State Commissioner of Police Hakeem Odumosu to parley with community heads and CDAs leaders in the enforcement of the new law and eradication of the menace.

He urged Odumosu to mandate all the Divisional Police Officers to comb all the nooks and crannies of Lagos communities to identity corners and base where cultists hold their meetings.

He added, “The passage of the bill prohibiting cultism and cult-related activities in Lagos State by the State Legislature is a step in the right direction. This will bring sanity into our community. In the last few months, we have seen and heard of how cultists are terrorising various communities in the State. Recently, they invaded a community in Ikorodu killing innocent souls.

Cultists are fast turning the State into a den of cultist. The Obasa-led State Assembly has done its bit by passing and transmitting the law to the executive. I am therefore appealing to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to treat the signing into law as matter of urgency.

For the collective interests of Lagosians, His Excellency should also ensure that traditional rulers and CDAs are drafted into the implementation of the law. These are the closest to the grass roots. They know all the bad eggs and hideouts in their various communities and as such can provide the needed assistance to the police in clamping down cultists and rendering necessary assistance by way of provision of vital information to the police.

The governor should also look into the issue of Base and corners across the State. Relevant government agency should step into this and ensure that all base and corners are demolished as many of them serve as point of meeting and hideouts for these cultists.”
