Kalejaiye tasks government, NGOs on ending domestic violence, poverty

With the growing rate of domestic violence in our society, High Chief Kehinde Kalejaiye has called on government at all levels to intensify efforts at addressing the ugly trend.
Kalejaiye in a statement on Thursday with particular reference to a viral video on the social media of a Nigerian woman with a bleeding mouth and nostril decried the growing rate of domestic violence in various homes.
According to him, there is an urgent need to educate and re-orientate the masses on the danger inherent in such abuses.
While admonishing the Federal and State government to address poverty which is responsible for the cause of many of the abuses, he enjoined non-governmental organisations and rights organisations to lend their voices to end violence against both gender.
He said, “Domestic violence doesn’t have physical symptoms alone. Many of it starts with abusive behaviours.
There are cases of husbands attacking wives, masters abusing housemaids, cousins violently abusing nephews and nieces and so on.
There are even cases of parents abusing their biological children. The list is endless. Domestic violence is not limited to beating alone. It also includes emotional abuse and verbal abuse. We are must know these signs.
From the community to the federal level, we need to orientate our people on the need to pay attention to happenings in our environments.
We must be our brothers’ keepers when it comes to abuses. Do not say you not less concern because your timely intervention could safe lives.”
He however tasks government at all levels to intensify efforts towards educating the citizenry.
He added, “The efforts of the Nigerians In Diaspora Commission, NIDCOM chaired by Hon Abike Dabiri to liberate Nigerians that are trapped in slavery across the world is worth commending. NAPTIP too is trying it’s best to end human trafficking but a lot still need to be done.
The government needs to focus on internal slavery and violence in our society.
The National Orientation Agency and other relevant bodies should step up their games by organising enlightenment programmes and also creating awareness on the evils of domestic violence.
Above all, they need to come up with policies to eradicate poverty in our society because at most time violence erupts in homes as a result of inability of the husband to fend for his family. As the saying goes, an idle hand is a devil’s workshop.
Also on the part of women, they should desist from violently attacking or killing their husbands because they caught them cheating. There are better and humane ways of delaying with infidelity in marriages. Definitely violence is not one of it.”
